Puffing Billy steam train is one of Melbourne’s favourite attractions loved by both tourists and locals. There are two routes to choose from to take this beautiful train and enjoy the picturesque views:
– Belgrave to Lakeside / Emerald Lake Park takes about 60 min (2 hours return).
– Go further to Gembrook for an additional 50 min (return takes 5 hours).
A departure ticket is bought with a specific time while for the return you can hop on any scheduled train. The ride will take you through beautiful forests, over bridges, and pass the waving passers-by, but the most exciting thing that both kids and parents love is that passengers are allowed to sit on the sills (except for children under 4) throughout the whole journey.
Both Emerald Lake Park and Gembrook have a number of activities to enjoy once you get there before heading back. At Gembrook Station kids are welcome to a train ride with Thomas and Diesel and meet the Fat Controller. Other family-friendly activities at Gembrook include a silent disco, jumping castles, family photos with Thomas and Friends, and an animal nursery.
Pre-purchased picnic packs are available on the Puffing Billy train. Only narrow prams fit through the carriage doors. The stations have snacks, toilets, and parenting rooms. And make sure to book popular events like A Day Out With Thomas in advance if you’re planning to go to Gembrook as they get booked out months in advance. Wear extra layers to not get cold sitting through the open window and extra sunscreen. Belgrave station (about 40 km away from Melbourne) has free parking.
