Located next to downtown Lisbon, the Alfama district is known for its castle, tiny streets, food and fado music. You can either stroll around the area or even spend a full day exploring Alfama.
With kids, it is recommended to start at the top of the hill, getting there by one of the elevators, so the journey goes downhill.
The area features Castelo Sao Jorge, wandering peacocks, a castle town with tiny shops and cafes, the Church and Monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora, a local flea market (open on Tuesdays and Saturdays), Miradouro (viewpoint) das Portas do Sol, and many more attractions.
To get the true sense of the Alfama, wander down the maze of narrow streets, but keep making turns not to miss unique findings.
